Give it your all

By Rusty Potter

In the journey of life, we encounter teachable lessons. Just like the simple task of buying lightbulbs taught me a valuable lesson from my mother (Mrs. Caroline Potter) about giving 100% in everything we do.

When she sent me to the store for 100-watt bulbs, the only bulbs I could return home with were 100-watt bulbs. This was a lesson in commitment and excellence. Anything less than 100 watts meant a return trip to the store. This simple act instilled in me the principle that mediocrity should not be an option. It’s about giving your best effort every single time, in every endeavor.

Success isn’t handed to us on a silver platter; it’s earned through hard work, sweat, tears, dedication, and a willingness to push beyond our comfort zones. As Vince Lombardi said, “ There is only one way to succeed in anything and that is to give everything.” These words resonate because they speak to the core of achievement – giving our all, leaving nothing on the table.

Life presents us with countless opportunities, but success favors those who are prepared to seize them. Being ready for the opportunity when it arises requires diligent preparation and commitment. As Lombardi emphasized, “ Any man’s finest hour is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle … Victorious!” Victory isn’t just about the outcome; it’s about knowing that we gave it our all, that we poured our hearts and soul into our work and emerged winners.

Let’s remember the lesson from the 100-watt lightbulb – give 100% in everything we do. Let us step out of our comfort zones, reach for greatness, and be prepared to seize the opportunities that come our way. For in the pursuit of excellence, there is no room for anything less than our best.
