“The heritage of the servants of the Lord”

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture:  If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing; whoever attacks you will surrender to you. “See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc; no weapon forged against you will prevail and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,”
declares the Lord (Isaiah 54:15-17).

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank God for another opportunity to pen what has been placed on my heart. We must always be grateful for our everlasting, eternal and endless Savior-Jesus.

Have you ever heard the saying, “If you dig one ditch, you better did two, cause the one you dig, it may be for you?” This interesting quote has been attributed to the infamous gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson, who according to sources, refused to “crossover” to secular music. In the 1950’s and early 1960’s, Ms. Jackson was instrumental in the civil rights movement and became first acquainted with Martin Luther King, Jr at the National Baptist Convention. As a result, she was afforded the opportunity to sing at the civil rights rally held in Montgomery, Alabama. Sources do not reveal why she made this quote or what attacks were being made upon her life or the lives of those who were in her circle, but she undoubtedly knew that “weapons may form but they would not prevail”.

Enemies and people will form weapons against servants of God; however, it is important to realize that an enemy of the “servant of the Lord” is an enemy of God. Throughout the Bible, we witness the enemy setting up pitfalls and dangers for God’s people, but they did not prosper. The enemies such as Pharaoh who enslaved the Israelites (Exodus) and Hamon who tried to destroy God’s people during Esther’s reign as queen (Esther). These men dug ditches but ultimately it was to their demise.

In our aforementioned Text, God has given a heritage to the children of Israel, even though they disappointed Him in their sin. No matter what happens or what weapon is formed, it shall not prosper. We must understand that when weapons form in our lives, our Text suggests the following: 1) The attack is not from God (Isaiah 54:15); 2) God created the one who created the weapon (Isaiah 54:16); and 3) the created weapon will not form (Isaiah 54:17). So, when the ditch is dug, just know that it is not for you. It is for them! “This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord.”
