“No man knows what he can do until he tries”- Dr. Carter G. Woodson

By Rusty Potter

We celebrate Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as “The Father of Black History.” Dr. Woodson was an American historian, author, and journalist. He believed that knowing our history shapes our future. Dr. Woodson once said, “ If you can control a man’s thinking, you do not have to worry about his actions.” He understood that knowledge is power – the power to rise above limitations, to break barriers, and to inspire. He became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Howard.

The month of February was selected because the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas fell in this month. Dr. Woodson understood the importance of education, history, and knowledge. He said, “ Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” Dr. Woodson strongly believed that Black History was a firm foundation on which young blacks could build to become productive citizens. His work has left a permanent mark in African-American culture. He has made sure the history of African- Americans will never be forgotten. Dr. Carter Woodson also said, “No man knows what he can do until he tries.”

As we celebrate progress and achievement, let’s take Dr. Woodson’s lesson to heart. Let’s commit to learning more, striving harder, and lifting others as we climb. Just as he ensured that our history would never be erased, we must write our legacy, one of excellence, resilience, and purpose.
This Black History Month, be “Smarter Than Yesterday”. Study the past, shape the present, and we must build a better future for the next generation.
