1.2 million people in the United States and 36.7 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV. There are 45,000 new HIV diagnoses every year in the United States and 1.8 million new diagnoses each year worldwide. Approximately 35 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses, making it one of the most deadly pandemics in history.
Each year on December 1st, we commemorate World AIDS Day, which honors those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. It is also a day to show support for people living with HIV/AIDS, and is an opportunity for communities to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
GO CARE Community Health Center is a local non-profit organization founded in 1988 that is leading Northeast Louisiana in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. GO CARE Community Health Center is located at 1801 North 7th Street in West Monroe, and provides free confidential HIV testing, education, and prevention materials, in addition to medical care for those living with HIV/AIDS using the latest tools available.
In observance of World AIDS Day, GO CARE Community Health Center will create a candlelight labyrinth and will be having “A Time to Support and Remember” those people living with HIV and those people who lost their lives to the illness. The event will be held Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 6 pm at GO CARE Community Health Center. The labyrinth will consist of a candle for each of the 764+ people who have died from AIDS-related illnesses in our area. At the center of the 54-foot labyrinth will be a space in which visitors can light a candle in memory of a loved one.
