From Seed to Cotton to Quilt

Carver-McDonald Branch Library located at 2941 Renwick St., Monroe, LA will host a community program on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with quilter Lena W. Kelley.

Lena W. Kelley began her quilting journey at a young age alongside her mother, helping cut fabric squares and triangles for quilt projects. Those early experiences became the foundation for a lifelong passion for quilting and craftsmanship. As a teenager, she mastered the sewing machine and learned how to transform individual fabric pieces into beautiful quilt patterns, pictures, and designs.

With more than 60 years of quilting experience, Lena has developed a deep appreciation for the art of quilting. She believes that careful fabric selection is one of the most important elements in creating a beautiful quilt, and her attention to detail is evident in every piece she creates.

Her first quilt completed independently was the Jacob’s Ladder pattern. She used this quilt as a fundraiser while serving as Director of Vacation Bible School (VBS), helping raise funds for a children’s trip. This project demonstrated not only her quilting talent but also her commitment to serving her community.

Over the years, Lena has created more than 150 handcrafted quilts for family members and friends. Each quilt represents her creativity, dedication, and love for preserving a treasured tradition that was passed down from her mother.

Today, Lena continues to quilt with the same enthusiasm and passion that began in her childhood. Through her work, she shares warmth, beauty, and lasting memories, creating heirloom pieces that will be cherished for generations to come.
