Integrated management plan now underway
Ouachita Parish, La — The Ouachita Parish Police Jury (OPPJ) is providing residents with an update regarding the temporary drawdown of Cheniere Lake, a recommendation from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), as part of a comprehensive strategy to combat giant salvinia, an invasive aquatic plant that has spread rapidly throughout the lake.
The temporary drawdown is one component of LDWF’s integrated management plan, which also includes targeted herbicide applications, biological control using salvinia weevils, strategic containment measures, and continued monitoring. Together, these efforts are intended to slow the spread of giant salvinia while protecting Cheniere Lake’s ecosystem, fishery, recreational opportunities, and long-term health.
OPPJ recognizes that lower water levels may create temporary inconvenience for residents and recreational users. However, the recommended drawdown is intended to help prevent the far greater long-term impact of an invasive species that threatens the lake if left unchecked.
The Police Jury will continue working closely with LDWF, local biologists, and the Cheniere Lake Advisory Board throughout the control management process and will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
