True humility is yielding the spotlight to Jesus

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture Reading: The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel (John 1:29-33)

My Christian Friends,

True humility is yielding the spotlight to Jesus. It is certain that humility can be defined in other ways; but for this message, we will focus on how important it is to take self-importance out of the equation and allow Jesus to be the center of it all.

How many events have been orchestrated that really promoted Jesus rather than the individual? How many times has the word I been utilized when encouraging others to participate in a certain event that was designed to bring a group of people together to glorify God? Does Jesus really have the spotlight during your church-called or religious community events? If so, wonderful!! If not, we must do better.
Jesus must always be honored in everything we do. In doing so, God will do great things through us. It is important that we understand that no matter how popular we may believe we are, we must always give Glory to Jesus and yield the spotlight to Him. The light that shines through us is, His light ; and we should be more concerned about people seeing Him so that they may believe the Gospel and be saved eternally. We must be cognizant (aware) of our arrogance when God has placed us in authority and/or influential roles. It is essential that we remain humble and allow Jesus light to shine through us. So, when people try to glorify you, do not accept it, but instead, point to Jesus and let them know that all glory and honor belongs to Him.

In our text for this message, John was baptizing the Jews and had become popular in doing so. However, he prepared the way for Jesus and would not accept a place of authority over him. In fact, he made mentioned that he was not worthy to unlatch the shoes of Jesus Christ, the One who would come after him (John 1:27). John truly knew who Jesus was, so his self-importance became null and void. In like manner, when we understand our roles and our places as a servant of God, true humility will prevail, and we will yield the spotlight to Jesus Christ.
