A series of local programs in Monroe are set to receive funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the State of Louisiana in the coming weeks. The funds will be used to support programs that fight poverty, joblessness, and youth mentoring.
One of the programs receiving funding is the “Black Tie Guys,” a program that mentors boys to achieve excellence and avoid delinquent behavior. The program is a year-round program for boys ages 9-16 that promotes scholarship, personal discipline, and preparation for life in the economic and social level of the world of “Black Ties.”
“We will help our participants dream of living in the Black Tie World instead of jail,” said Roosevelt Wright, Jr., program director. “Lebron James, Micheal Jordan, and Tyler Perry are popular, but they have one thing in common, they are bonafide billionaires, who live in the Black Tie World.”
The program promotes the 5 Ws of success: Well dressed, Well Read, Well Traveled, Well Spoken, and Well Disciplined, said Wright.
“We have mentored thousands of youth over the years who may not be billionaires, but they know how to live, move and navigate the system. They know how to live in the “Black Tie World,” said Wright.
The next recruiting meeting of the Black Tie Guys will be at the Marbles Recreation Center on July 1st at 5 p.m.
