To kick off Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as “The Father of Black History.” Dr. Woodson was an American historian, author, and journalist. The month of February was selected because the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas fell in this month. Dr. Woodson understood the importance of education, history, and knowledge. He said, “ Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”
Dr. Woodson strongly believed Black History was a firm foundation for young blacks to build on to become productive citizens. His work has left a permanent mark in African – American culture. He has made sure the history of African- Americans will never be forgotten. Dr. Carter Woodson also said, “No man knows what he can do until he tries.”
