New Miss Grambling State University believes in service to others

Campus leader walks the walk with week of service before coronation

Grambling, La – For Ashley Dabney, the 67th Miss Grambling State University, it’s all about the journey.

She was crowned Saturday in coronation ceremonies at T.H. Harris Auditorium.

Her mission, she says, is to “showcase my evolution of mental/emotional health, the roller coaster moments with my physical health, and most importantly showcase what it means to be your authentic self while still serving an institution with confidence, grace, and poise.”

The senior from Gainesville, Georgia, is majoring in business marketing and business management.
She says her life has been enriched with service to others, from directing voting drives to food banks. “We must never forget our responsibility to serve others,” she says.

In fact, the Miss GSU and her Royal Court participated in a week of service before the coronation. She called it the “Journey to Queendom.”

Recently, she shared her experiences with a regional college student audience by participating in “College Survival Chat: A Virtual Event.” During the Zoom session, she discussed “Creating a Legacy and Overcoming Obstacles While in College.”

As part of her platform as Miss GSU, she wants to continue to serve as a mentor for Grambling State students by connecting with them to make them feel at home, and by conducting events such as breast cancer awareness that include everyone.

During her years at Grambling State, she served in the President’s Leadership Institute, and continued her leadership path as sophomore class president and Student Government Association chief of staff. She became a member of NAACP and served as Miss NAACP. She also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and currently serves as its president.

She has been involved with the National Society of Leadership and Success and the Student Technology Committee. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholar has also served as a senior resident assistant.
