Hundreds of people gathered in Monroe on Saturday, June 17th, to celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The celebration featured a parade that began at Wossman High School and ended at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo Pavilion. The parade featured floats, marching bands, and other entries and was met by hundreds of residents who cheered and waved as they passed by.
The parade featured 82 units that included floats and walking participants led by the Carroll High School Marching Band and the Delhi High School Percussion Section.
After the parade, a family festival was held at the pavilion. The festival featured free food, drinks, and entertainment, as well as speakers who addressed the importance of Juneteenth and the quest for freedom and black community unity. About 500…
