Father God! May I climb into your lap and go to sleep?

By Dr. Jacquelyn Simmons

Dear our Father God,

Some of Your readers of this column may mistakenly think that the subject of this article is a request for death. However, by explanation, this writer is referring to the solace of being safe in Your arms which serve as a way of quieting the many storms which arrive in our lives from day to day and sometimes more often than that.

As many babysitters can attest, when some babies are left with them, sometimes they begin crying and misbehaving uncontrollably and no amount of their soothing tactics are effective. They try dancing, eating of sweets and fruits, serving extra portions of warm or cold milk ahead of scheduled time, playing with gadgets especially designed for babies, displaying and using favorite toys (according to their parents), singing, etc., but to no avail. Praying and watching the clock does not seem to be encouraging. But suddenly, ahead of the agreed time, the babies’ parents or another familiar face appears, reaches out with extended arms, sits down, and rocks it a while on his/her lap and…The sitter wonders whether this is the same child in whom he/she has been previously ineffectively trying to engineer calmness.

LORD, in a Biblical account for this message, Your Son, Jesus Christ had gone to sleep on a pillow in the hinder part of a ship, and a great wind and waves arose creating havoc and fear among His disciples. They rushed to where He calmly lay, awakened Him while questioning Him as to whether He was concerned about their plight. He arose, rebuked the winds, and said unto the sea, peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And He said unto them, why are ye fearful? How is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, what manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him? (Mark 4:35-41 KJV).

Dear our Heavenly Father, over the years, and especially nowadays, some of us, Your created children, are admittedly fearful as we helplessly watch the storms and waves of life increase all over Your beautiful created world. It appears that true Christian values among us are spiraling downward at a rapid increasing pace. The more some of us helplessly cry, our, and in some instances falsely elected selfish world, national, international, state, and local leaders (babysitters) are not trying to placate us by doing that which You have deemed to be right. But, by their sinful antics, are using their babysitters’ position given by You to cause more of our tears to flow and institute unrighteousness according to their definitions and not Yours.
However, we who know You, know that someday according to Your timetable, You will let them know that we are Your children and Your lap is always available and we will be lifted up there by

You and remain in safety and love forever and ever. Amen.
Thank You, Father, for hearing my prayer.
Love You much,
Jacquelyn Simmons.
