Crabs in a bucket

By: Rusty Potter

If you put one crab in a bucket, it can climb its way out of the bucket. But if you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket, one may try to climb out, the rest will pull it back into the bucket. The “crabs in a bucket mentality are known as the “If I can’t have it neither can you”. Just like a bucket full of crabs, some will try to climb up to freedom but the others left behind will just try to pull them back down to the bottom. If the crabs worked together, they could all escape.

Do your friends encourage you to take a leap of faith, or do they try and pull you back down to reality? We can be smarter, more cooperative and more encouraging than crabs. We all as people can accomplish greater, bigger and better goals in life. If you support the people around you, they will also support you. Booker T. Washington said, “ To hold a man down, you have to stay down with him.” Find people outside the bucket who will pull you up and out. The people that you surround yourself with will determine how far you go in life. One of the best things you can do is believe in yourself.
