“A short pencil is better than a sharp mind”

By Rusty Potter

There’s an old saying that still holds a powerful truth for students today: “A short pencil is better than a sharp mind.”

At first, it sounds strange. Isn’t having a sharp mind the goal? Of course it is. But even the brightest students can forget an assignment or miss a deadline, because it wasn’t written down.
Success in school isn’t just about intelligence – it’s about discipline.

Every year, students set ambitious goals. Goals that are written down become plans. Plans that are reviewed daily become results. The Bible gives us the same wisdom in Habakkuk 2:2: “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.”

When you write things down, something powerful happens. Your thoughts slow down. Your focus sharpens. Your commitments increase. A written goal is harder to ignore than a passing thought.

That’s why you’ve probably heard it said: “Note takers are money makers.” It may sound like a catchy phrase, but it carries real wisdom. The students who take careful notes often understand lessons better. Top students don’t rely solely on memory. They use planners. They keep calendars. They take notes in class. They write reminders. They track deadlines. That “short pencil” becomes their secret weapon.

Think about this: how many times have you said, “I’ll remember that,” and then didn’t? Test dates sneak up. It’s not because you aren’t smart. It’s because your mind was never designed to store everything. It was designed to think – not to be your filing cabinet.

Writing things down reduces stress. It builds confidence. It gives you control. Instead of wondering what you forgot, you know exactly what needs to be done.

Students, your future is being built right now – one class, one assignment, one decision at a time. Don’t leave it to chance. Don’t rely only on memory. Develop the habit of writing things down: your homework, your goals, your ideas.

That small habit can separate average from excellent.

Your mind is powerful. Sharpen it. Challenge it. But don’t depend on it alone.

Pick up the pencil.

Because sometimes, the smallest tool in your hand can build the biggest future for you.
