As I watched my daughter walk across the stage to receive her Master’s degree in Public and Educational Policy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN, it was truly a proud moment. What made the occasion even more special was that it took place on my birthday, what a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. Yet, as meaningful as that accomplishment was, it did not surpass the joy of knowing that she fears God and seeks to walk in His truth.
A mother’s greatest joy is not found in perfect children, or worldly success. Instead, her deepest joy comes from seeing her children walk in the fear and knowledge of God. Although children may sometimes display rebellion or immaturity, a godly mother understands that God is still at work in their lives. In fact, mothers should never underestimate what God can do through their children, but instead nurture them patiently in faith, prayer, and truth which continues through adulthood.
The Bible teaches that children are a blessing from the Lord. Psalm 127:3 (NIV) says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” Because children are gifts from God, parents are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding them spiritually. Likewise, Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) instructs, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse shows the lasting influence of godly instruction, for even if children wander, the truth remains in their hearts.
In today’s culture, many families face spiritual confusion and broken relationships. Nevertheless, mothers who remain steadfast in prayer and committed to God’s Word become anchors of hope for their families. They understand that true success is not measured by a degree, wealth or popularity, but by rearing children who know and serve the Lord. Timothy’s faith, for example, was influenced by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. In 2 Timothy 1:5 (NIV), Paul wrote, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”
Ultimately, a mother’s greatest joy is seeing her children walk faithfully with God and live according to His truth. This is the same heartfelt joy the apostle John expressed in 3 John 1:4 (NIV) when he wrote, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children (believers)are walking in the truth.” In the same way, a godly mother finds her greatest fulfillment not in earthly accomplishments, but in knowing her children love, obey, and serve the Lord. Indeed, this joy carries eternal value. In the end, a godly mother leaves behind more than memories, she leaves a legacy of faith that can impact generations to come.
As mothers, we must not give up on our children. We must keep the faith, continue in prayer, and trust God to work in His perfect timing, knowing He will come through.
