Man jailed when malnourished pit bulls were reported

Says he didn’t have time to take them to a vet

A Sterlington man was arrested Friday afternoon after police found two pit bulls in deteriorating health housed in a backyard, according to court documents.

Brandon Tyson, 40, was taken into custody by the Sterlington Police Department on July 31, 2026, at approximately 1:00 p.m. following an animal complaint call.

Tyson faces one charge of:
Simple Cruelty to Animals (L.A. R.S. 14:102.1)

Severe Malnutrition and Injuries Observed

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Ouachita Parish District Court, Officer M. Burlew was dispatched to the property at approximately 12:55 p.m. in response to an animal complaint.

Upon arrival, Officer Burlew observed two dogs being housed in the backyard of the property exhibiting severe medical distress:
Brown Pit Bull: Exhibited signs of severe malnutrition, with its ribs and backbone protruding from its body. The dog’s ears had multiple bleeding scabs with flies hovering around the open wounds.

Black Pit Bull: Found in the same yard displaying multiple scabs across its ears.

Officer Burlew took photographs documenting the condition of both animals.

When interviewed by law enforcement, Tyson reportedly stated he “has not had time to take the animals to the veterinarian.”

Tyson was placed in handcuffs, verbally advised of his Miranda rights, and transported to the Ouachita Correctional Center (OCC), where he was booked on the animal cruelty charge.
