“What must we do to do the works God require?”

By Lisa Wilmore

Scripture Reading: When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God require?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

My Dear Friends,

In an effort to do more for God, people may ask the question, “What does God want me to do?” In other words, “What must we do to do the works God require?”

Interestingly, there is a growing generation of millennials and young adults who seek after the works of God without understanding that all things first begin with believing in the One He sent; Jesus, His Son.

I truly believe that social media portrays a picture that misinterprets to young and some “seasoned” people what God has assigned the believers in Jesus Christ to do. It is not about doing as much as it is about believing. Jesus simplified the matter to those who sought after physical bread with no understanding of the eternal bread who God sent in human flesh.

To further expound on the aforementioned text, the “crowd” is in search of Jesus, not because they want Him, but because they want bread. So, when they found Him, Jesus shared with them their motivation in seeking Him-not for the signs that He had performed but for the loaves they had already indulged in. Of course, Jesus tells them to not look for food that spoils but for food that the Son of Man will give them which will last to eternal life. (John 6:25-27). Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God require?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Yes, my friends, the requirement to do the works of God is to believe on Jesus Christ. It is simple. We must believe and acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ, Son of the living God, and then embark on a life for Him which ultimately satisfies God.

The Question: What must we do to do the works God require?” The Answer: Believe in Jesus, the One God sent (John 6:29).
