Monroe Mayoral candidate Marie Brown and City Councilman Doug Harvey were among volunteers in South Monroe recently helping to remove debris in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday Tornado.
Harvey, who is not seeking election, climbed on houses with a buzz saw and slipped with the saw running, but was caught before he hit the ground.
In another incident, Harvey cut his hand on broken glass as he tried to enter a home crushed by a tree. No one answered the door, but volunteers heard a dog barking inside. Afraid the owner may be injured Harvey and others broke a window to gain entrance to help find the suspected owner.
The owner was not present but had exited safely after the tree crushed her roof.
Brown bandaged Harvey’s bleeding hand in the incident.
Brown and her mayoral competitor Friday Ellis were part of a team of volunteers that checked houses blocked by trees and temporarily repaired roofs with tarps.
