Tempers flare as city ignores Black residents over city dumping site!

Tempers flared at the Monroe City Council meeting Tuesday as residents lined up to protest the city’s dumping and burning on the old city dump.  As residents complained, Mayor Oliver Ellis, who made the decision,  refused to explain his decision to use the dump.

Burning in the dump continues as the city opts to save money by dumping and burning debris on the old city dump that has been closed for 40 years because it is a public safety hazard.

The city sought approval from the Department of Environmental Quality to use the dumpsite for two years on the provision that the area used is at least 1000 feet from any houses or businesses.
