Stop chasing approval: Start building your life

By Rusty Potter

Nobody else’s opinions ever paid your bills – take control of your life and turn action into results.
In life, it’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else thinks. Family, friends, coworkers – have opinions, and many are quick to share. But here’s the truth: nobody else’s thoughts ever paid your bills.

Too many people spend their lives chasing approval, changing their decisions based on what others might say, and waiting for validation that may never come. Every moment you spend worrying about is a moment you aren’t investing in yourself. Every “Will they like me?” or “Do they agree?” is a brick in the wall between you and your potential.

Real success doesn’t come from a consensus. It comes from consistency, discipline, and courage – the courage to act even when others doubt you. It comes from showing up every day and doing what needs to be done, even when no one is clapping. And it comes from doing it wholeheartedly, as Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” When your focus is on honoring God with your efforts, the opinions of others lose their power over you.

When I started training for my first marathon, the consensus was that I wouldn’t finish. People around me doubted my ability, questioned my stamina. But instead of letting their thoughts dictate my limits, I trained. I got up early. I kept running when I had the time. Now, I’ve completed four marathons. Not because people believed in me, but because I believed – and because God honored my effort.

Look at the people you admire. Chances are, they didn’t get to where they are by listening to everyone else or fearing criticism. They took risks, made mistakes, and kept moving forward. They understood that opinions are free and dreams require your work.

Protect your time like it’s your most valuable asset, because it is. Stop seeking permission to pursue your dreams – you already have it.
