Is the Monroe City School system failing African-American students?
Is the system graduating an increasing number of African-American students who are not prepared to attend a four-year university?
Recently released results of statewide testing of schools across the state showed a wide disparity between the performance of white and black students who attend Monroe City Schools.
In short, the majority of white students in Monroe City System score “Advanced and Mastery” in core subject areas, while the overwhelming majority of African-American students are below basic.
What do the scores show?
Overall the state’s testing results showed white students with scores that were often triple those of their black counterparts in the measured coursework.
Among high Schools, 62 percent of white students scored Advanced or mastery in English 1, while only 23 percent of Black students had similar scores. Among Asian students, 70 percent were advanced or mastery in this subject. The results showed that 54 percent of African-American students scored below basic in this subject.
In English II, 75 percent of white students scored Advanced or mastery, while only 30 percent of Black students had similar scores. The results show that 50 percent of Black students scored below basic.
In Algebra, 60 percent of white students scored advanced or mastery, while only 13 percent of Black students had similar scores. The results show that 79 percent of Black students scored below basic.
In Geometry, 43 percent of white students scored advanced or mastery, while only 10 percent of Black students had similar scores. The results showed 71 percent of Black students scored below basic. Among Asian students, 80 percent scored advanced or mastery.
In U.S. History, 52 percent of white students scored advanced or mastery, while only 10 percent of black students scored similar results. The results showed 77 percent of Black students scored less than basic.
In biology, 35 percent of white students and 50 percent of Asian students scored advanced or mastery. Only 11 percent of Black students had similar scores. The results showed 66 percent of black students scored below basic.
