Services set for former Wossman basketball great, Nina Bass

Services for Denenna “Nina” Bass will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Greater Free Gift Baptist Church in Monroe, Louisiana.

Denenna R. Bass, affectionately known as “Nina,” passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 60. Born on December 17, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mattie Turner and Frank Seals, Nina was a beloved member of her community and a devoted follower of Christ.

A graduate of Wossman High School’s class of 1981, Nina was a star power forward on the basketball team and had an unwavering love for the sport. Her passion for singing gospel music was equally strong, with “I’m Going Up Yonder” being her favorite song to perform. Nina served as a choir director at New Saint John Baptist Church and later united with the Greater Free Gift Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Rodney McFarland, Sr.

Known for her infectious humor and popularity, Nina’s love for the Lord shone through in every aspect of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie Turner and Frank Seals; her grandmother, Sally Bass Dunn; and her daughter, Kim L. Bass.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Shemika S. Bass; son, LaDarrius S. Bass; five sisters, Sophia Jones, Andrea Jones, and Leshel Crawford of Chicago, IL, and Sharon Hunter, Vanessa Hill, and Nuglenda Jacobs of Monroe, LA; three brothers, Roderick Turner (Katie) of Chicago, IL, and Bennie R. Hunter and Elzie Hunter of Monroe, LA; one granddaughter, Z’myra A. Bass of Monroe, LA; one great-granddaughter, Journei Z. Anderson; one great-grandson, Kimari P. Bass of Monroe, LA; and a close acquaintance, Tony Kim. Nina also leaves behind a host of other family and friends who will deeply miss her presence in their lives.
