“See what the Lord has done”

By Lisa Wilmore

“See What the Lord Has Done,” written by Nathaniel Bassey, a song that calls believers to recognize and testify to God’s faithfulness after seasons of waiting. At Christmas, that testimony finds its greatest fulfillment in the birth of Jesus Christ.

The birth of Jesus marked the moment heaven touched earth. “And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger” (Luke 2:7, NKJV). Angels announced His arrival to shepherds, declaring, “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11, NKJV). What prophets foretold and generations prayed for had finally come to pass. Truly, we can say, “See what the Lord has done.”

Simeon was among those who waited patiently and faithfully. Luke recorded, “And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him” (Luke 2:25, NKJV). God had given him a promise: “It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26, NKJV). When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus into the temple, Simeon took Him in his arms and blessed God, declaring, “For my eyes have seen Your salvation” (Luke 2:30, NKJV). He did not only recognize the Baby as an infant, but mainly as the Savior of His people and the world.

In addition, Anna, the prophetess, also recognized the fulfillment of God’s promise. Scripture conveys to us “She did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day” (Luke 2:37, NKJV). At the very moment she saw Jesus, “she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem” (Luke 2:38, NKJV). Her long years of worship prepared her to recognize the Savior when He appeared.

Interestingly, the message of Nathaniel Bassey’s song comes alive in these Scriptures-“See what the Lord has done; what we’ve been waiting for, He has brought to pass.” Christmas reminds us that God’s promises will never fail. He kept His promise and sent us a Savior.

This Christmas, we must stand with Simeon and Anna in joyful recognition of what The Lord has done. May we look upon Jesus and declare with grateful hearts, “See what the Lord has done.” The Savior is born, salvation has come, and what we have been waiting for, He has truly brought to pass. No one can deny the fact that the celebration of Christmas declares a joyful truth that is JESUS, our Salvation, our Savior. “See what the Lord has done!”
