Political leaders warn voters to check voting status before elections begin

Local civic leaders are sounding the alarm for Ouachita Parish residents to verify their voter registration status following the release of the state’s inactive voter list. Jamie Mayo, Chairman of the Democratic Parish Executive Committee (DPEC), and Cliff Thomas, President of the local NAACP, issued a joint announcement today urging citizens to act before the upcoming April deadlines to ensure their voices are heard in future elections.

The push for awareness comes as the Democratic Committee prepares to begin publishing the names of inactive voters in local media outlets starting next week.

Why Voters Are Listed as “Inactive”

A voter is placed on the inactive list when the Louisiana Secretary of State cannot confirm their current address. While these individuals remain eligible to vote, they face significant risks if they do not take action.

“Inactive voters risk being completely removed from the rolls after two regularly scheduled federal general elections,” the announcement noted. “Don’t lose your voice. Stay active and stay counted”.

How to Check and Reactivate Your Status

Residents can immediately check their status by using the [suspicious link removed]. If a name appears on the list, there are four primary ways to restore active status:

  • Mail: If you received an address confirmation form in the mail, sign and return it immediately.
  • Online: Update or confirm your address digitally at GeauxVote.com.
  • In-Person: Visit the Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters at 701 St. John Street in Monroe.
  • Email: Contact the Registrar’s office at ouachitarov@sos.la.gov.

Critical Deadlines

Timing is essential for voters who wish to vote in their correct precinct. Those who wait until early voting to make changes will be required to vote at the precinct currently on file with the Registrar. However, those who update their information by the registration deadline will be able to vote at their correct local polling place.

The deadlines for the upcoming cycle are:

  • April 15, 2026: Last day for in-person or mail-in registration and changes.
  • April 25, 2026: Last day for registration or changes made via GeauxVote.com.
