Our City, Our Community: Homecoming

By Marie Brown

Homecoming is a celebration where people from all walks of life come together to enjoy various events in churches and schools, among others. Students and alumni often celebrate the entire week with parades, coronations, and football games. This is a time when schools make their presence felt. There is a significant economic impact locally, as retail and food stores see constant visits from residents buying items needed for tailgating activities.

This past weekend, Wossman and Richwood football teams faced off at Grady Jones Stadium in Monroe. Due to the heated rivalry, the stadium was packed with fans from both schools, and the tailgating areas were at full capacity with alumni groups gathering to enjoy diverse foods and reconnect by sharing their life experiences.

Ironically, one common topic of conversation was the political climate at the national, state, and local levels. People are deeply concerned about the direction we are headed because of policy changes. It’s encouraging to see that even at a football game, folks are talking about voting in the upcoming elections. The crowd at the Wossman/Richwood game could have a real impact if just half of them head to the polls to vote. It would be wonderful to have a victorious homecoming if people united at the polls to celebrate change and voted out those who are leading us in the wrong direction. When that happens, we can continue to Love where we Live and Live where we Love.
