“No man knows what he can do until he tries”

By Rusty Potter

To kick off Black History Month, we honor historian and journalist Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as “The Father of Black History”. The month of February was select- ed because the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas fell in this month. Dr. Woodson understood the importance of education, history, and knowledge. He said, ” Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”

Dr. Woodson strongly believed Black History provided a firm foundation for young blacks to build on to become productive citizens. His work has left a permanent mark in the African- American culture. Dr. Woodson has insured the history of African- Americans will never be forgotten. Dr. Carter Woodson also said, “No man knows what he can do until he tries”.
