Funeral service for Matthew Williams, III, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2026, at New Tabernacle Baptist Church in Monroe. Public viewing will be from noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2026, followed by a family hour from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Miller’s Funeral Home in Monroe.
Matthew Hamilton Williams, III, known affectionately to teammates and local sports fans simply as “Pig,” Williams left an indelible mark on the regional sports landscape as a powerful, versatile fullback whose athletic journey connected Monroe to the national stage.
Born on April 11, 1951, Williams grew up in Monroe during an era of immense talent in local prep football. At Carroll High School, he earned his formidable nickname of “Pig,” who often dragged defenders downfield as he ran for touchdowns.
Towering over defenders with a rare blend of explosive speed and punishing size—eventually filling out to 5 feet, 11 inches and 210 pounds—he became the centerpiece of the Bulldogs’ offense.
He played collegiate ball at Baylor University.
He also played professionally with the World Football League.
In his later years, Williams remained a revered figure among local sports historians and elder statesmen of the Carroll High family, often remembered for his booming laugh, competitive fire, and the gentle demeanor that contrasted so sharply with his “Tank” persona on the gridiron.
