“If you love me, then keep my commandments”

By: Lisa Wilmore

Scripture: If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the spirit of truth; who the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:15-17).

To my Christian friends,

It is of great joy to be a part of God’s family. His love, which extends as wide as it is deep, should compel us to continue on the path he has set before us. Even though distresses and burdens happen in our lives, his love overshadows the mere essence of the heartaches birthed from the struggle of survival.

He revealed his love for us through Jesus; in like manner our love for him should be expressed by keeping his commandments. Consequently, he gives us the holy spirit to care for us, guide and help us live as God commands us to do so.

In the above noted text, he specifically taught the disciples that another comforter would come after his ascension from the earth. Now that he has ascended, he lives in us. Through the holy spirit, Christ’s presence and power guide, counsel, and comfort us. With this in mind, we must always yield to his spirit and keep his commandments.

Jesus taught his disciples saying, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). That is to say, “if you love me, then, keep my commandments”. In particular, the “if-then” statement is defined and exampled as, “if a certain behavior is performed, then certain consequences may follow”.

For instance, “if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his son, cleanseth us from all sin” (1John 1:7). “If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, “then ye also shall continue in the son, and in the father” (1John 2:24).

In addition, “If we keep his commandments, then this we know that we have come to know him” (1John 2:3).

Dear hearts, God has proven his love through sending Jesus, his son, who redeemed us from our sins. Not only has he shown us love through his son, he continuously reveals his love every day of our lives as he embraces and awakens us each morning.

Once we have accepted Christ as our personal Savior we possess undescribable love for him. So, if we say that we love him, then we should keep his commandments.
