Davis may get $20,000 bonus after shift to Carroll

School Board to decide whether to give $20,000 award to Carroll’s new principal for last year’s award as state’s top principal; some think its incentive pay for leaving Wossman

Carroll’s new principal, Dr. Eric Davis, has received many praises accolades for making the shift from being principal of Wossman High to his alma mater, but nothing tops it off better than dollars…$20,000.

The Monroe City School Board will consider a resolution to give Dr. Davis a one-time $20,000 award check that will come a year after he was named Louisiana State’s Overall Principal of the year.  It’s not listed as an incentive for moving to Carroll but an award for being named Principal of Year last year.

Last year, Davis was named the 2019 overall state Principal of the Year.

The resolution on the agenda does not call Dr. Davis’ name, only refers to “Principal of the Year” and “Teacher of the Year” for the year 2019. Davis is the only person in the state that meets that qualification.

The resolution reads:

WHEREAS, the Louisiana Department of Education annually receives
nominations for, recognizes and gives award recognitions to exceptional teachers and school leaders through Teacher and Principal of the Year Programs; and

WHEREAS the Monroe City School District employs exceptional teachers and school leaders who, perennially, are strong contenders for the overall awards of Louisiana Teacher of the Year and Louisiana Principal of the Year; and

WHEREAS exceptional teachers and school leaders who win the overall awards as Louisiana State Teacher of the Year and Louisiana State Principal of the Year are deserving of award pay compensation for achieving the required instructional excellence that results in student academic success; and

WHEREAS it has become a tradition among other Louisiana school districts to grant award pay to exceptional teachers and school leaders who win the overall awards as Louisiana State Teacher of the Year and Louisiana State Principal of the Year.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Members of the Monroe City School
Board authorize the payment of award pay to any teacher or school leader who wins the overall awards for Louisiana State Teacher of the Year and Louisiana State Principal of the Year, and authorize such to be payable as a one-time pay supplement to any teacher or school leader who is employed of record by the Monroe City School Board for a period of at least one week following the date that this resolution becomes effective and who wins the overall awards as Louisiana State Teacher of the Year or Louisiana State Principal of the Year for the year 2019 and for any year thereafter.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the amount of the award pay for an
employee who wins the overall award as Louisiana State Teacher of the Year shall be twenty thousand dollars and the award amount for an employee who wins the overall award as Louisiana State Principal of the Year shall be twenty thousand dollars and payment shall be subject to available funding.

The board will meet on Thursday, September 12th at 5:30 p.m.
