Powerful things happen when those who have succeeded give back a portion of their knowledge and skill to help others.
While there are thousands who “give back,” Deion Sanders and closer to home, Broderick Fobbs are perfect examples.
Sanders, known as “Coach Prime,” is a retired NFL Hall of Famer who shocked the football world when he decided to become the head coach of Jackson State Tigers in 2020.
Jackson, Mississippi, was excited to get a man who earned two Superbowl rings as their coach. Deion didn’t disappoint them. In two years of “giving back,” he transformed the Tigers from a losing team to SWAC champions, attracted national attention to JSU, and promoted the team like crazy, even on CBS’ 60 minutes.
Obviously, JSU couldn’t afford “Coach Prime.” Their $500,000 salary was more than they had paid anyone else, but Sanders was “Giving Back,” so the money didn’t matter. He gave back more than he received.
When Colorado offered him $25 million over five years, “Coach Prime” took the deal, but not before setting an example to others of what can happen when talented people “give back.”
While many are angry that Deion is leaving, Jackson State is happy for the breath of life and hope he gave them during his “give back.”- Givebacks don’t last forever.
Closer to home, Broderick Fobbs is another example of “Giving Back.”
Fobbs is from a football family with roots at Carroll High School. His father, Lee Fobbs, was an awesome running back at Carroll, played with the Buffalo Bills, and coached all over the country, finally stopping at GSU as a running back coach.
Broderick coached the GSU Tigers for eight seasons and amassed a 54-32 record that included a SWAC and national championship.
When Broderick Fobbs left Grambling, he shocked the athletic world when he decided to become a running back coach for the Ruston High School Bearcats. His daughter was a student at the school, so he did what thousands of fathers do, he pitched in to help out the school’s football team.
What made Fobbs’s decision remarkable is that it was a true “Give back
