City mourns recent deaths, services set for others

Families across Northeast Louisiana are preparing to honor the lives of loved ones who recently passed away. Several funeral services and visitations are scheduled in Monroe, Bastrop, West Monroe, and surrounding communities.

George Wade, Sr., 72

George Wade, Sr., of Monroe, died September 7, 2025. Born June 5, 1953, in Rayville, Wade was the son of the late Eddie Richardson and Mary Calloway Wade. He accepted Christ at the age of 71 and was baptized on June 1, 2025, at Greater Free Gift Missionary Baptist Church under Bishop Rodney McFarland, Sr.

A plumber by trade, Wade worked nearly five decades in the profession and was known for his cooking skills, strong family ties, and community involvement with the group once called the “Godfathers.”

Visitation will be Friday, September 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at McFarland Funeral Companies, 1901 Burg Jones Lane. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 20, at 2 p.m. at Greater Free Gift Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Richwood Memorial Gardens.

Stevie Mitchell, 72

Steven “Stevie” Mitchell, a longtime Monroe mechanic, died September 4, 2025. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 20, at 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home.

Clara Mae Haynes, 89

Clara Mae Haynes, an educator from Bastrop, passed away September 10, 2025. Visitation will be Friday, September 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church in Bastrop. Services will be held Saturday, September 20, at 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in West Monroe, with interment at St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, Bastrop, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.

Angie Smith, 82

Angie Smith of Monroe died September 6, 2025. Visitation will be Friday, September 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pleasant Green Baptist Church of Monroe, 5133 Brown Road. Services will be held at the same church on Saturday, September 20, at 2 p.m., followed by burial at Richwood Memorial Gardens.

Lonnell Dantzler, 71

Lonnell Dantzler of Monroe passed September 14, 2025. Visitation will be Thursday, September 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at McFarland Funeral Companies. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, September 26, at 11 a.m. at Zion Traveler Baptist Church, with burial at Monroe City Cemetery.

Leon Riley III, 59

Leon Riley III, a Monroe retail manager, died September 6, 2025. Services were held September 15 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with burial in Richwood Gardens under Smith Funeral Home’s direction.

Addie Turner, 78

Addie Turner of Monroe died September 5, 2025. Visitation will be Friday, September 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home. Services will follow Saturday, September 20, at 2 p.m. at Parkview Drive Church of God in Christ, with burial in Richwood Gardens.

Roy Hood, 79

Roy Elridge Hood, formerly of Monroe and a resident of Shreveport, died August 29, 2025. Memorial services were held Thursday, September 11, at Smith Funeral Home.
