The Greater Louisiana Baptist State Convention gathered in Monroe this week for its annual session, drawing pastors, members, and youth from across the state for a time of worship, training, and community service.
The convention, led by its president, Rev. Ricky Carter, was officially welcomed to Monroe by City Council Chairman, Rev. Rodney McFarland, Vice Chairman, Minister Verbon Muhammad, and Councilwoman, Juanita Woods — a trio affectionately known in civic circles as the “Brown Bombers” for their advocacy and leadership.
While nightly worship services are being hosted at Greater Antioch Baptist Church, much of the convention’s focus this year has centered on youth empowerment and community outreach. Youth delegates from Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and Monroe gathered at The Wellspring on Tuesday for a special service project assembling clothing and hygiene packs for the homeless.
Shenia, one of the young volunteers, said the experience touched her deeply. “I enjoy helping people because that’s what Jesus taught us to do – to serve and love others,” she said.
Valaysia, another youth participant, echoed that sentiment. “I love serving because I love my community,” she said with a smile as she helped sort clothing donations.
Trenia, from Goodhope Baptist Church in Lafayette, reflected on the deeper meaning of the project. “Jesus never wanted us to look down on anybody. He wants us to reach out and help – not judge – because we don’t know their situation,” she said.
Youth leadership sessions and workshops are being held at Walker Hall on the campus of the University of Louisiana Monroe, equipping young people with tools to lead and evangelize in their communities.
Rev. Carter said the decision to meet in Monroe reflects the convention’s mission to spread the saving grace of Christ while empowering youth to carry the message forward.
Formed 13 years ago as an offshoot of the Louisiana Baptist Convention and aligned with the National Baptist Convention, USA, the Greater Louisiana Baptist State Convention has grown into a vibrant fellowship of churches dedicated to ministry, service, and youth development.
