Scripture to Ponder: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience…” (Col. 3:12-14).
My Brother and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! It is a blessing to pen once again what God has placed on my heart for this week’s message. Just know that I love you with the heart of Jesus Christ and will confirm that He loves you even more. His love is everlasting, eternal, and endless. Thank God for His love!
For the past few weeks, we have journeyed through “clothing ourselves” with those things that emulate Christ. We have discovered through His Word that we must ‘clothe ourselves with compassion’; we must ‘clothe ourselves with kindness’; and now, it is essential that we ‘clothe ourselves with Humility’. In Christianity, it is known that the “only way up is down.” To the world, this does not make sense but to a child of the Most High King, it makes perfect sense. If you are a steward of God’s Holy Word, then you understand and yield to the teachings thereof.
Listen to God’s Word about humility: “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up (James 4:10 NKJV); “When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2 NKJV); “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:6 NKJV); By humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches and honor and life (Pro. 22:4 NKJV). Jesus, through parables, taught about those who seek honor. In Luke 14, He advised people not to run to the high places at a feast or wedding. Instead, as it has been said, “wait to be asked up and not down.” Jesus said, “For whosoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).
The question may be asked, how can we humble ourselves? Do we stay or put ourselves in a degradation position to try to appear to be humble? Do we downsize or put ourselves down and put on a facade to show others that we are clothed in humility? Well, this is not what humility really means. One Scholar wrote, “Truly humble people compare themselves only with Christ, realize their own sinfulness, and understand their limitations. On the other hand, they also recognize their gifts and strengths and are willing to use them as Christ directs. Humility is not self-degradation; it is realistic assessment and commitment to serve.” (LASB, 1508).
