The Monroe community is mourning yet another murder in our community, starting 2019 off under the same dark cloud as last year.
The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim killed in a double shooting that happened Tuesday.
Deputies have identified the deceased victim as LaKeidra Deontinik Rodgers, age 22 of Monroe.
Deputies say Rodgers was apparently shot by the suspect, Dontavious Darnell Rucks, age 19, of Monroe.
The suspect, Rucks, then apparently shot himself, receiving a life-threatening wound and was receiving hospital treatment early Wednesday.
Reports about Rucks’ status have varied as his condition changed.
Many of Ruck’s friends on social media began posting “Rest in Peace” Tuesday night, but police have not confirmed his status as of late Wednesday.
The shooting happened at 3:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Meredith St. in Monroe.
