Our City——Our Community

By Marie Brown

It has been approximately 13 months since Jeff Landry was sworn in as the new Governor for the state of Louisiana.  Also, it has been a little over a month since Donald J. Trump was sworn in for his second term as President of the United States of America… The democratic process was adhered to as both men were elected by a majority of the electorate.

As in all elections, some were rejoicing because their candidate won and others were saddened because their candidate lost.  Many changes are taking place on both the federal and state levels that have so much fear and anxiety for many regardless of who received their VOTE.  Leaders on all levels of government in addition to other community leaders plead with citizens to register to VOTE and exercise that right to VOTE.  Unfortunately, minority VOTING is taking a deep dive and continues to plummet because of apathy.

Several surveys taken are saying that minority VOTERS are losing ground because young VOTERS between the ages of 18-45 are not VOTING and many of them are not seeing the need to register to VOTE.  More education and efforts need to be prioritized to turn this trend around.

There is an election on the ballot on MARCH 29th.  There are 4 Amendments to be considered:  Laws and rules are changing and those who do not VOTE are making a difference in the outcome.

Amendment 1: Rules for out-of-State Lawyers and Courts

Amendment 2: Changes to Taxes and State Revenue

Amendment 3: Charging Some KIDS as ADULTS

Amendment 4: Filling Judge Vacancies Faster

Please VOTE NO ON ALL 4 amendments!

A local parish measure on the ballot will build a new school in South Monroe and renovate others.  Please VOTE YES!

EARLY VOTING BEGINS MARCH 15 and ENDS MARCH 22
