Monroe mourns passing of Abe E. Pierce, III, Pioneer leader dead at 86

***First African-American President of the Ouachita Parish Police Jury 1988-1996

***First African-American Supervisor and Assistant Superintendent of Ouachita Parish Schools.

The Monroe community mourns the passing of Abe E. Pierce, III, one of the most influential leaders of Ouachita Parish in his generation.

Pierce died Sunday, August 1, 2021, of natural causes. He was 86 years old.

In over 50 years of public service, Pierce became a dominant figure in charting the direction of Ouachita Parish and changing the quality of life and enfranchisement of the poor and minorities.

An educator, he served as a classroom teacher at Richwood High School and served four years as its principal.
