He meant it as a joke for April Fool’s Day, but a North Monroe man soon found that even joking about a gun around a school can get you in a world of trouble.
Monroe police arrested 72-year-old Edward Cheek after he pointed a toy gun at three teachers at Lexington Elementary School and said, “Bang, bang, April Fools.”
On April Fools Day, across the nation people do crazy things to get a laugh; the more unorthodox the prank the bigger the laugh. That’s apparently what Cheek had in mind when he pulled his prank Monday.
According to the arrest report, on April 1, 2019, at approximately 8:05 a.m., Edward Cheek pulled into the drop-off area of Lexington Elementary in the proximity of three separate teachers and pointed a toy gun at each of them and said “bang, bang, April Fools.”
The three teachers each said they initially thought the gun was real as Cheek pointed it at them and made them feel threatened.
Once Cheek moved forward in the line, they noticed it was a toy gun.
Officers made contact with Cheek at his residence.
He admitted to pointing a small orange water pistol at the teachers as an April Fools joke.
He also surrendered the water pistol.
Cheek was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center on three counts of assault on a school teacher.
He has since been released.
