Many voters have made up their minds on issues on next week’s ballot. For those who are still undecided, we make the following recommendations:
U.S. SENATE
Gary Chambers
Mr. Chambers is a young man who advocates for the disenfranchised. His work as an advocate has contributed to advancements in the justice system, healthcare access, and to equality in the municipal contracting process for minority-owned businesses. We think he would be a fine Senator.
5TH DISTRICT CONGRESS
No Recommendation
The incumbent’s views are so out of touch with minorities and working people that we don’t feel comfortable giving a recommendation. The others on the ballot are no better. Hold your nose and pick one.
CITY SCHOOL BOARD
Deborah Smith, District 4
Brenda Shelling, District 7
The city school board is failing African-American students. In nearly every school, the overwhelming majority of African-American students are scoring below basic in core subjects, while other races excel. The present system leadership has failed us. We recommend Brenda Shelling in District 7 and Deborah Smith in District 4. We feel both will push for changes that will make a difference.
