Noted churchman and singer, Anzell Calloway died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, after a lengthy illness. He was 53.
Calloway, loved by thousands in the Monroe community for his upbeat spirit, and concern for others, despite the fact that he was blind and amputee.
A singer and churchman, Calloway was blinded as a result of diabetes years ago. However, he did not allow his blindness to slow his service to the Antioch Baptist Church and to the local community.
A year ago, he was praised by a long list of community personalities for his positive attitude and as an inspiration to others. According to neighbors, he called the sick and organized charity actions as well as regularly attended worship. Last year the disease forced him to have both legs amputated, but Calloway remained upbeat, working the telephones from his home to arrange help for the less fortunate and cheering others.
