Brotherhood is theme of city King Day speaker

Lt. General Stacy Hawkins, a native of Bastrop, was the keynote speaker at the City of Monroe’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day program, held Wednesday at the Monroe Civic Center.

Addressing a crowd gathered to honor Dr. King’s legacy, General Hawkins highlighted the civil rights leader’s embodiment of the biblical principles outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, which describes the fruit of the Spirit, emphasizing love as the cornerstone of his mission.

“The fruit of the Spirit are not just abstract concepts, but living, breathing principles that can guide us in our daily lives,” General Hawkins remarked.

“We can see the fruit of love in Dr. King’s commitment to the civil rights movement and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of others,” he said.
