Vanessa Comanche-Rice was born April 4, 1958 in Monroe, La to the union of Henry K. and Essie B. Comanche. She was the third girl of the six girls six boys Comanche clan. She began her education at Mt. Nebo Elementary, she also attended Burg Jones Lane Elementary, Thomas Jefferson Jr. High, Wossman High and received an associates degree in Business at Robinson Business College here in Monroe, La. She worked in Ouachita Parish School system teaching Home Economics for over 20 years and she worked with G.B Cooley until her health did not permit her to work. Though she wasn’t a registered business owner she was a true entrepreneur, she made money from cooking, sewing, decorating, and bookkeeping over the years.
She accepted Christ into her life at a young age, she was baptized at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, under the leadrership of Rev. V.M. Brass, she was a girl scout leader, Youth Director, and a part of the Food Committee, she remained a faithful member, active with the Youth Ministry, under the leadership of Rev. Houston Simmons until her death. Her father Henry K. Comanche, brother Kelvin Dewayne, God-parents Doyle and Beatrice Nelson, both maternal and paternal grandparents proceed her in death.
She leaves to mourn her mother; Essie B. Comanche, her six biological children: Tamara Jefferson (Jesse), Kenneth Rice, Jr., De’Artae Rice, Kentrael Rice, Danzel Rice, and Taneiqua Rice, six God children Tyesha Harris, Stephen Staten; Annika Law, Sinita Gonzales, Nicole Rogers, and Christopher “SLICK” Columbus; 12 grands and 12 god-grands: Tamella, Ja’Quan, Donquerreus, T’yana, Domonique, Sarai, Jaheim, De’Artae, Jr, Ayanna, Kayla, Jayden, Rajun “Fat Daddy”, De’Antwan “Duece”; Kirsten, TJ, Dee, Nivea, Randy, Kaniyah, Kaleigh, Kamyrn, Lil Willie, Chad, a Great-Grandson: Jarell Comanche, six sisters: Sandra, Bernita, Wynita, Bernita Comanche, Michelle Pugh (Etho), Charita Johnson, Eula Johnson, seven brothers: Henry K. “TINY TIM”, Gerald, Ronald, Reginald, Januel Comanche, Alvin Ray and James Heckard, one God brother Dole Nelson, two dear freinds Paula Smith and Shirley Johnson, a hosts of nieces, nephews and cousins. The Family of Vanessa would like to thank all those in attendance for helping us celebrate Vanessa’s life. For every act of kindness thoughtful gestures that have been bestowed upon us during this time of bereavement. Vanessa was a bright, shining light in this world and we take solace in the fact that she will live in our hearts.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, 2930 Jackson St. Monroe, LA.
