Ouachita Parish is currently flooded with yard signs all over the place. The most amazing sights are the number of billboards from various political candidates running for offices. This is a new norm because in the past the community has never seen some candidates with multiple locations. …and Yes—it’s time to prepare to vote in November.
There is always talk about registering people to vote. This is obviously important; however, not enough emphasis is put on focusing on those who are already registered and encouraging them to vote. We are now seeing our younger generation engaging in the political process. Are we assisting in preparing those who are committed to serving the people or supporting others who are seeking a title? We need to be very careful because we are experiencing some challenging times.
I heard the story about a young lady who was a waitress at a local restaurant, and when a patron sat down to order food, she said she had voted for him. After the patron thanked her, he proceeded to look her up on the GEAUX VOTE APP and found her name listed as an active voter. The young waitress indicated that she wanted to get involved in the community, which is wonderful. This is what we need. There are many ways to recruit young people, but we need to be very strategic in how we proceed.
Jamie Davis is the US Democratic primary nominee in Louisiana for the November election. He has already made history by being the first African American to be the nominee. Davis now has the opportunity to be the talk of the country by being victorious in November. This can happen if voters flood the polls, saying that it is time to elect a person who will represent everybody. When this happens, We can Love where We Live and Live where we Love.
