Sex is built into the system from the Olympics all the way down to our local athletic teams. This week however the German Gymnastics team at the Olympics decided to make a statement they hope will change things.
Their decision not to be viewed as sex objects but as athletes has sent shock waves around the world as the “Woke” trend focuses on how the world sexualizes female competitors, dancers, and athletes.
It began when four members of the German women’s gymnastics team walked onto the competition floor on Sunday evening at the Olympics wearing sparkly ankle-length unitards. Immediately, eyebrows were raised and spectators and sports announcers whispered a silent “Oh my God!”
They chose not to wear the bikini style leotards associated with gymnastics that are often so revealing that it becomes a distraction for some.
Their ankle-length unitards sent a message that Germany’s gymnastics federation has characterized as “against sexualization in gymnastics.”
The Germans first competed in long-legged unitards, as opposed to the leotards that are common in women’s gymnastics, at the European championships in April. At the time, one team member, Elisabeth Seitz, said the choice set an example “to all gymnasts who may feel uncomfortable or even sexualized in normal suits.”
“Every gymnast should be able to decide in which type of suit she feels most comfortable,” Seitz said.
The sexualization of women begins in elementary and high school. It even happens in our parish.
We’ve been doing it so long that everyone accepts it as a prerequisite for female participation.
Why do female cheerleaders wear little short outfits that show their legs and shapes, but male cheerleaders wear long outfits in which they are completely covered?
Why do female majorettes wear similar outfits, but male twirlers have different, full-bodied, uniforms?
Some say the sexy uniforms make it easier for the females to dance, kick their legs and perform flips. However, the German Gymnastic team dispelled that myth because their ankle-length unitards didn’t prohibit them in any way, in fact, they said they unitards are more comfortable.
This practice works its way down to elementary school-age dancers and performers. The girls dress skimpy, the boys are fully covered.
Often those who promote this sexualization also send a subliminal message to girls that sex appeal pays.
High schools, for example, often dress dancers, majorettes, and cheerleaders in uniforms that display all of their assets and appeal to the prurient interests of some in the stands.
When schools sell sex appeal, we make it easy for those who want to watch and photograph sexy young girls to do so legally.
Dirty old men and Pedophiles can buy a ticket to a basketball or football game, take a seat in front of the thinly-clad youth and take photos of them, hundreds of shots, using cells phones. If they are later raided by police for being in possession of photos of thinly clad under-age girls in suggestive poses, the Pedophile can truthfully claim that the photos were taken at a perfectly legal public athletic event.
For the price of a game ticket Pedophiles and dirty old men get to see what they would otherwise go to jail for viewing.
Ironically, if those same girls reported to school on Monday morning wearing clothing similar to what they wore on Friday night, they would be suspended for violation of the school dress code, but their male counterparts would be accepted.
When the girls display their sex appeal for the school’s profit, it’s acceptable; otherwise, the dress code applies.
The Miss America contest has dropped the swimsuit competition because the competition emphasizes sex appeal rather than character, intellect and personality. Others around the world are taking a second look as well.
The German Athletes raised eyebrows around the world, but it will take time for masses to break from this long-standing tradition.
Why will it take so long?
Sex sells, even in Ouachita Parish!
