Residents of Monroe, Louisiana, faced a tumultuous evening as severe thunderstorms swept through the region, unleashing powerful winds, torrential rain, and widespread flash flooding. The National Weather Service issued multiple warnings, including a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 6:00 PM CDT and a Flash Flood Warning extending to 8:15 PM CDT, urging residents to seek higher ground and avoid flooded roadways.
The storms brought wind gusts reaching up to 70 MPH, particularly impacting southern Monroe, West Monroe, and nearby areas. These fierce winds downed tree limbs, scattered debris, and caused isolated power outages across Ouachita Parish.
“It sounded like a freight train outside,” said local resident Tanya Harris, who witnessed branches falling in her South Monroe neighborhood. The Monroe Police Department reported several roads, including South 2nd Street and Winnsboro Road, were temporarily closed due to fallen trees and debris.
Heavy rainfall, with Doppler radar and rain gauges recording 1 to 3 inches across the region, triggered significant flash flooding in rural areas.
