Dr. Carter G. Woodson (December 19, 1875-April 3, 1950) was a historian, author and a journalist. He is know as the father of Black History.
The month of February was selected because the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas fell in this month. Dr. Woodson understood the importance of education, history and knowledge saying: “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teachings of biography and history.”
He strongly believed black history provided a firm foundation for young blacks to build on to become productive citizens. He devoted his life to bringing the achievements of black to the world’s attention.
Dr. Woodson’s work has left a permanent mark in the African-American culture. His work has insured the history of African-Americans will never be forgotten.
