Southern wins Classic and a year of Trash Talk begins

The dust hadn’t even settled in the Caesars Superdome before the talk started. Southern University fans were already celebrating their fourth straight Bayou Classic victory over Grambling State — and that meant one thing for sure: another full year of trash talk.

The Jaguars capped a rocky season by shocking the heavily favored Tigers, 28–27, in a thriller that came down to the final seconds. For Southern fans, it was redemption. For Grambling fans, it was heartbreak. And for everyone in between — it was pure entertainment.

The Game Recap

Southern, limping into the matchup at 2–10, looked dead in the water after trailing 17–7 at halftime. But interim head coach Fred McNair and his squad refused to quit.

“It’s just the resiliency of these guys,” McNair said. “They fought every day. To keep these guys motivated during the changes — it was tough. The coaching staff did a great job. These guys were resilient.”

Led by running back Barry Remo, the game’s MVP, the Jaguars clawed back with a 51-yard touchdown run that ignited the comeback. Remo finished with 107 yards on just seven carries. Trey Holly added two scores of his own, including a clutch fourth-quarter touchdown that set up the final drama.

Down 27–21 with just over seven minutes left, freshman quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy delivered the throw of his life — a 34-yard strike to Khalil Harris for the go-ahead touchdown. Southern’s defense sealed the win when Demetrios Walker stripped Grambling running back Andre Crews, and Ckelby Givens pounced on the ball with 32 seconds left.

When the clock hit zero, the Jaguars had secured their fourth consecutive Bayou Classic victory — and a whole year of bragging rights.

Let the Trash Talk Begin

It didn’t take long for the online banter to explode.

“Grambling fans calling asking me to spare them. Lol,” laughed Jason Jones on social media.
Another Jaguar supporter added, “Southern’s band, Southern’s team makes GSU steam!”

Edward Demar piled on: “Grambling fans, where you at? Talk all that noise and can’t back it up!”

Even as the scoreboard told one story, longtime fan Letitia Polar put it best: “No records matter at Bayou Classic, it’s just a straight-up cat fight.”

Elton Finney agreed, “SU had a losing season, but we won what counts. The Bayou Classic is the Super Bowl!”
And James Clayton added fuel to the fire: “One point or 50 points, a win is a win. It’s SU — we do what we do!”

For Grambling loyalists, the pain was personal. Maynard Jones fumed, “This is the kind of stuff that gets a coach fired. You can lose every game in the season, but we got to put up with this SU trash talk for a whole year!”

Slick Francois agreed: “Throw them record books out the way. Grambling must be pissed off — who knows, the coach might be fired after that performance.”

And even among the victors, there was humility. FJh Thomas posted, “Yeah, Jags 4-peat by the skin of our teeth.”
Connie Fontenot admitted, “Tigers had it but let it go at the end.”
But Jaynayee the One couldn’t resist one final jab: “It’s funny how GSU talked all that trash about SU’s losing season… then come down here and lose the damn Super Bowl and cry all the way back to Grambling!”

More Than a Game

Every Thanksgiving weekend, the Bayou Classic does more than crown a winner — it unites a culture. From Baton Rouge to Grambling, from tailgates to church pews, it’s a family reunion wrapped in brass bands and rivalry pride.

For some, the game is football. For others, it’s legacy.

Whether you wear blue and gold or black and gold, one truth remains: the trash talk is just part of the tradition — and after Southern’s latest triumph, it’ll echo for another 365 days.

Because in Louisiana, some things never change.

Southern’s on top — again — and the talking has only just begun.
