Registrar says new laws change voting rules

New Absentee Voting laws for Louisiana are now in effect as of this month. Isabel Butler, Ouachita Parish Registrar of Voters, said three laws signed into effect by Governor Jeff Landry will change a few rules concerning absentee ballot voting, voter registration drives, and ballot harvesting.

Butler told the Free Press Monday that the first of three new laws (Act 380) is to deter ballot harvesting and close a loophole in a previous law. She said a person can’t take more than one absentee ballot to the registrar’s office by any means, except if it’s for immediate family members.

In the past, community activists could deliver stacks of absentee ballots to the registrar’s office or drop them off at the post office.
