Our City, Our Community: Invisible Group

By Marie Brown

The Indivisible Group of Northeast LA hosted a “No Kings” event under the bridge at US 165 and Renwick St. in Monroe, LA.  This past Saturday, a large crowd of citizens met on one accord to address the injustices that are coming from Washington, DC, and throughout many states in addition to Monroe.  Although the Indivisible Group is a national movement which is non-partisan, people are coming together regardless of political party to say we are about democracy and there are “No Kings” in America.

Indivisible is a progressive movement and organization in the United States Initiated in 2016 as a reaction to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States. The movement’s organizational components include the Indivisible Project, Indivisible Civics, and Indivisible Action.

During the event, there was entertainment and speeches given by a variety of people from throughout our community. There were signs with “No Kings” on them and were waved as motorists passed by. The most amazing thing was protesters passing by who were anti the movement waved their flags, and some made racial comments. This also occurred a couple of months ago when we marched across US 165 to the Booker T. Edition.  We never disrupt their events by spewing similar rhetoric. There were absolutely no police on-site or seen during the entire event.

It appeared that it was planned that way.

In addition to the national movement of “No Kings,” the movement is also targeting the City of Monroe.  There is very little economic development going on in the most populated area in the city (South Side).  The Mayor has bypassed the Home Rule Charter to request the Governor to select a Fire Chief which is unprecedented to not only Monroe but throughout the state. This is why some of us are not afraid to stand up and speak out on the many injustices.  The right-wingers are saying we hate America…No!  We love Democracy!! This is the only way we can Love where we Live and Live where we Love!
