Our City, Our Community

By Marie Brown

The United States celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this past Monday. It is the only federal holiday designated for national service by law (the King Holiday and Service Act of 1994). The focus is on transforming the holiday into a day of action, not just rest but by participating in volunteer work. There was a number of volunteer efforts in our community and I want to highlight one of them. The Booker T. Washington addition is one of the oldest community in the City of Monroe. Over 100+ volunteers came out and worked in the Esther Gallow Community Garden. This garden was started in 2022 and the site was donated by Christopher Davis, son of the late Esther Gallow. It affords local residents to have access to fresh vegetables.

Dr. King’s work focused on literacy, hunger, health, environment and community empowerment. We commend all community clubs and organizations who do days of service throughout the entire year Those who complain need to take a look of these examples and get involved. It’s a wonderful time in the neighborhoods when you see work being done to improve their quality of life. Keep up the good work so we all can Love where we Live and Live where we Love
