Mrs. Alma Handy, wife to the late Jessie L. Handy, passed away on February 20, 2021, at her home surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Lorene Swayze and Percy Gill. Mrs. Handy is a graduate of Carroll High School Class of 1959, and she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Grambling State University. After 30 years of service in education between multiple districts, she retired from Ouachita Parish School system.
She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church. Throughout her life she was a Sunday school teacher, a Deaconess, member of the church mission ministry, and served in the church in a number of other capacities.
Mrs. Handy is survived by her three children: LaShell Handy-Baker, Bakari Handy, and Althea Bush. Also, she leaves to cherish her memories her sister, Arnetta Allen, brother, Merherdis Gill, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
She was someone who lived her life with purpose, gratitude, and grace. She will be remembered for her kind spirit, dedication to her faith and family, love of education, and commitment to helping others.
She is in the care of Smith’s Funeral Home. Viewing will be on Friday, February 26th from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Smith’s Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Greater New Antioch Baptist Church which is located at 301 Sherrouse Ave. This will be a private memorial celebration. Social distances guidelines will be in place. Therefore, a mask is required and temperatures will be checked upon arrival. The interment will be at Richwood Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
